How to Factory Reset your Xfinity Modem, Router or Gateway

Resetting your Xfinity modem can be a useful troubleshooting step if you are experiencing problems with your internet. Resetting your modem will reset any custom settings you have made, so it is important to be aware of this before proceeding. 

In this article, we will outline two methods for resetting your Xfinity modem. Whether you need to reset your modem due to technical issues or simply want to restore it to its default settings, we’ve got you covered.

Newer modems that don’t have a reset button hold the WPS button for 30 seconds.
Older modems with a reset button in the back use a toothpick to press and hold for 30 seconds.

Reset Method 1: With no reset button

To factory reset a newer Xfinity modem or gateway that doesn’t have a reset button on the back, use the following steps:

  1. Locate the “WPS” button on the back of your gateway
  2. Press and hold the button for 30 seconds or until all lights are off
  3. Release the button and wait for your modem to power back on
  4. Once your modem has restarted, try connecting to the Internet again

Reset Method 2: With a reset button

To factory reset an older Xfinity modem or gateway that has a reset button on the back, follow these steps:

  1. Locate the “Reset” button on the back of your modem. (small recessed button)
  2. Use a toothpick to press and hold the button for 30 seconds or until all lights are off
  3. Release the reset button, and wait for your modem to power back on
  4. Once your modem has restarted, try connecting to the Internet again

Important notes

It is important to note that factory resetting your modem will erase all of your custom settings and restore the modem to its original default settings.

This includes your:

  • WiFi name and password
  • firewall settings
  • managed devices
  • parental controls

If you made any custom settings on your modem, you will need to reconfigure them after the reset.
